Other Parts of the Spine
Spinal nerves have both motor fibers and sensory fibers. The area of the skin innervated by the sensory fibers of a certain root is known as the dermatome. The dermatomes are named according to the spinal nerve which supplies them. If there is a loss of nerve function, the region of skin which it supplies is not usually completely numb because adjacent spinal nerves also provide innervation to the area.
